The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts was the venue for the Illinois District chorus
and quartet competition Oct. 5-7, 2018.
New Tradition, SOI, Interlude Claim Titles
The 2018 competition for Illinois quartets and choruses, held in Bloomington Oct. 5-7, included
several levels of contests, including district and international levels (international competition is
July 2019 at Salt Lake City). The winners:
CHORUS
International Chorus Preliminary: Won by The New Tradition Chorus, directed by Dan
Wessler, earning the district champion’s automatic bid.
District Chorus Championship: Won by Sound of Illinois, directed by Terry Ludwig. (Prior
winners must lay out two years before being eligible to win again; New Tradition was 2016
champion.)
QUARTET
International Quartet Preliminary: Won by Interlude, the only Illinois quartet to qualify for
international contest. The quartet includes: Tenor Ben Mills, Lead Mark Servos, Baritone
Nathan Gross, Bass Ben Light.
District Quartet Championship: Won by Interlude.
International Seniors Quartet Preliminary: Won by Take Note, which will represent Illinois in
the international seniors contest. Members are: Tenor Rick Anthoney, Lead Ralph Brooks,
Baritone Dick Kingdon, Bass Ed Chapman
District Seniors Quartet Championship: Won by Flashback, crowned 2018 district champion.
Members are: Tenor Jerry Anton, Lead Mike Schnitzler, Baritone Kevin Downs, Bass
David Boo.
Wildcard for International Chorus Contest: After all 17 district chorus contests were
completed in the fall, Sound of Illinois earned and accepted a wild card invitation to compete in
Salt Lake City, marking the 12th consecutive year as an Illinois representative.
